Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the best fishing destinations in the world. Apart from the forest and gaming reserve safaris, here you can also go on a relaxing fishing tour. However, fishing in South Africa is no ordinary fishing; the landscape, the mountains, the lakes and the diversity all play their roles in making Cape Town a wonderful experience. To make your experience even more wonderful and memorable we have a few ideas or tips form the top fishing experts in the world.

WHERE TO GO?

Within Cape Town there are numberless splendid locations for an enchanting fishing experience. Our experts recommend Kommetjie. Kommetjie is often been called the home of the Cape Crayfish or Rock Lobster. The region is an angler’s heaven! As, from Kommetjie it is only about 30 nautical miles to the deep sea fishing grounds off Cape Point.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME?

For crayfish or rock lobster, season from November to May is the best time. To our advantage, most of this period we have many national holidays including Christmas and Easter. Also during these months many cheap flights to Cape Town are offered by top airline. For more information about ongoing special deals and flight offers with leading airlines see Cheap flights to South Africa.

WHAT ARE THE BEST TECHNIQUES?

During November to May crayfish can be caught both by potting with a net or by diving. White steenbras, stompnues and galjoen are caught from the rocks at Kommetjie and further along the coast.

TIPS ON BAITING

Firstly, let me tell you that our experts consider “Red Bait” as the ultimate choice for fishing in South Africa. Here, let me also tell you Red Bait (Pyura stolonifera) is a type of sea squirt and regardless of its appearance it is actually an animal and not a plant as many believe. Red Bait is one of the few types of bait that is just as appealing to the fish when preserved as it is when it is fresh.

WHERE TO FIND RED BAIT

Red Bait is usually collected at low tide when the larger growths are exposed and easy to reach. Red bait is cut from the rocks with a sharp knife. The knife can now also been used to extract the red bait from its leathery casing. This is done by carefully cutting downwards using the point of the knife around squirt or nipple looking part of the red bait. The casing can be cut open wide enough to allow the index and middle finger to go down the inside of the casing and extract the bait. But with any pursuit on the rocks care must be taken to watch the sea at all times while collecting bait. Safety comes first.

PRESERVING THE BAIT

Most anglers have there own ideas how to preserve there Red bait, but our experts have their own method. Place the red bait on a large amount of newspaper in your bait fridge and allow it to drain for an hour are so. Mix equal parts of salt and brown sugar. Place the red bait in a tray and mix thoroughly with the sugar and salt. Now place the thoroughly mixed red bait in a jam jar or any glass jar (air tight) and when nearly full top up with more sugar and salt mixture. Seal the jar and place in the bottom of your bait fridge. The will preserve the bait for at least 3 months, leaving you ready to go fishing any time.
