Located in the central city this museum is easily accessible, established by the provincial government in 1867 as a small museum but since then it has grown remarkably to cover the diverse natural and human heritage of New Zealand, now this museum is considered as an internationally visited Institution. The New Zealand Historic Places Trust has registered the building of the museum as a historical place. This museum holds more than 2 million items including items related to Maori and Antarctic exploration. This museum faced some partial damage due to the 2011 earthquake, although it did not face any structural damage and it is estimated that about 95% of the collections remained unharmed. A statue of William Rolleston in front of the building fell off its base after the earthquake the museum was closed for damage estimation. But after a few days it was reopened for the visitors.
