Discovering Sarajevo, Bosnia

The capital of the federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is Sarajevo, is most popular for its religious diversity with as many as four diverse religions coexisting in this metropolis city. The main religions that breathe in this area include Islam, Orthodoxy, Judaism and Catholicism, which have their origins rooting back to centuries old dynasties. Although, the city traces back its existence to prehistoric times, the modern city of Sarajevo aroused in the 15th century with the Ottoman Empire establishing its strongholds.

Sarajevo bridges

One of the most beautifully constructed figures that are calmly placed over the rushing rivers of Sarajevo, are the bridges it possesses. Baščaršija (Bashcharshiya)

The word Bascarsija literally means a ‘main market’. This bazaar is as old as the early 16th century and beats as the heart of Sarajevo. A trip to this place is bound to take you back to old times when the city was under the great Ottoman Empire. With many traces of the ancient empire still intact today, Bascarsija has a collection of shops offering local metalwork, jewelry, and pottery and much more.  Historical and traditional souvenir, copper accessories which are designed through the use of special techniques borrowed from centuries old traditions; show a stunning display at the oldest street in Bascarsija, Kazandžiluk Street (Coppersmith Street).

This market place will provide you with rare traditional art crafts and antiques which have been the area’s long cherished possessions.

The City Hall

The city hall represents the largest and longest held structure from the historic Austro- Hungarian rule of Sarajevo. The unique styles used in building the City hall are known as the Mozarab and Moorish models from Spain.

The hall’s structure has a unique triangular base having a six-angled centre point. The great hall, which is also the most important part of this posh design, is headed with a glass dome. Huge luxurious facades of red and yellow are applied in order to complement its jaw-dropping beauty. Right besides it, there rests an ornamented door-way which opens a path into the magnanimous hall. All in the entire Hall is a historic monument and an awe-inspiring sight.
