Zimbabwe Festivals : Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA)
HIFA is a six day annual festival and workshop programmed that showcases the very best of local, regional and international arts and culture in a comprehensive festival programmed of theatre, dance, music, circus, street performance, spoken word and visual art. It is set in the beautiful capital city of Zimbabwe, Harare.The festival has come to be seen as an important symbol of something positive about Zimbabwe. Unifying socially and culturally disparate group of Zimbabweans at a time of ideological conflict and political uncertainty bringing huge audiences together to celebrate something positive-the healing and constructive capacity of arts.
HIFA began in 1999 and since then has taken the Zimbabweans and South African arts scene by storm. It is now the largest cultural event in Zimbabwe and among the eight major festivals in Africa. The festival showcases the best of Zimbabwean performances and fine arts while at the same time staging and exhibiting the most exciting and creative international and regional performances.
The Harare International Festival of Arts provides a platform to both experts and amateurs to display their creativity and one get to see the best of international and regional artwork in this festival. Each year HIFA announces a theme that drives the artistic policy of the festival-such as "The Art of Determination" and "About Face" etc. HIFA has successfully employed arts and culture as a vehicle to encourage freedom of expression and open discussion of issues concerning Zimbabwe; it is more than an artistic happening.
