Many Airports Effected Due to Bad Weather & Heavy Snow

With the onset of Holiday season, major UK airports and air traffic is highly affected due to heavy snow and bad weather. It’s not only the air traffic and run ways but highways and roads require extra time and a lot of patience due to holiday rush topped with bad weather conditions and congestion. This year, the country is experiencing the most widespread snowfall in last 17 years. Icy road conditions and heavy snow are expected to spread into parts of southern England today from the north of the country and Scotland. According to the Met Office warning released today, snow will spread southwards overnight, with the Midlands, the South East and parts of southern England possibly seeing 2 to 5 cm of snow. In another weather warning last night, its claimed that London may see as much as 8 centimeters (3 inches) of snow. The office issues weather warnings when there is at least 80 percent confidence that severe or extreme weather is expected.

Heavy Snow Causes Flights Cancellation

Many airports have temporarily closed while some are only able to provide limited services. The major UK airport conditions as collected from their websites and Twitter state:

  • Various Flights from Manchester to Frankfurt and flights from Heathrow airport were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
  • Newcastle airport improved in condition after it was closed yesterday.
  • Edinburgh Airport reopened today in noon after closing last night “due to heavy snowfall”.
  • Another major international airport in Britain, Glasgow Airport has also reopened after shutting earlier yesterday.
  • Whereas runway at Aberdeen airport was closed for about four hours during afternoon yesterday.
  • Stansted Airport is also warning passengers to check with their airlines and allow for longer journeys to the airport as heavy snow is forecast for the region

Edinburgh airport’s runway is now partially opened, allowing some departures, but a number of airlines have cancelled or delayed flights this evening. The snow has also resulted in some disruption at Newcastle airport with more closures expected tonight.

Travelers are advised to remain prepared for changes and contact their carrier or agent before leaving for airport and make sure if there has been any rescheduling or cancellation in place. Also one must have sufficient time, to drive to the destination timely.

In this season a high volume of air traffic is likely especially for holiday makers. Flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Accra, Harare, Sydney, Brisbane, Lusaka, Dubai, Lagos, Addis Ababa and Far East destinations including flights to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives and Seychelles are widely booked by air travelers. Cancellation of holiday flights can cause a major loss for airline industry.
