Why waiting for the right time to visit Zambia

If you are planning to have your holidays in sun, safari and something extraordinary than book your flights to Zambia. Why Zambia, most importantly because this Thanksgiving holiday Zambia is the one destination that does not require packing up your fur coat rather pack your flip flops and sun glasses. Also Zambian sun will give you the perfect tan, even in December and the wild life safari here, is the best you can find in Africa.

However, there is one thing that you should always check when planning a vacation that is totally dependent on outdoor activities and that is weather.

I have heard stories where couples pack for a beach holiday only to land at the wrong time of the year when there is no one on the beach except wild dogs and that, only to be followed by raining cats and dogs !!! Turning the whole beach to a puddle of sand.

At a Safari holiday, imagine you are in an open Safari Jeep and it starts to rain. Which means you will have to take cover / shelter (that is not usually within easy access), plus all animals will be hiding and you won’t be able to take photos or even protect your camera form drenching.

So here is the advice part, Climate in Zambia is often defined as “tropical”. Most time of the year, weather is ‘humid tropical’ or ‘tropical wet’ and dry. However, moving towards the south-west and along the Zambian Valley you will experience small stretches of semi-arid steppe climate.

There are three main seasons that can be divided in the 12 month duration of a year. The first one is the ‘Rainy Season’. This season is the bad time to travel to Zambia. However during this time, November to April you will get your Christmas as well as Easter holidays and there will be plenty of cheap flights to Lusaka advertised too but travelling without weather precautions is not a good idea.

The second season is the summers of Zambia. The summer season is the happy season like it is everywhere in the west. The weather between months of May, June to October/November remains good. Sky is clear most often.

Within the summers, starts our third season, that is the ‘dry season’. The dry season can get ‘cool dry’ that is more bearable and extends from May to August. The second subdivision of this dry season is the ‘hot dry season’. The hot dry season runs from September to November. Unlike cool dry, the nights are also hot during this season.

During the dry season, the landscape is lush and green, while the hot season (till November early December) is the best time to see wild life at full action. For bird watchers, wet season suits the best.
